Kayra, GLTS Junior, Carpentry
I really like being on site here. I really like the team work. It’s fun getting work done together; you can talk and work at the same time. I have 2 jobs after school, so I am working a lot, really just time for school, homework, working and sleep.
I chose carpentry because the things we did in exploratory were hands on, building a bird house and building a dog house. Then Covid. All last fall I was taking classes online. Online it was like, staring at a screen, watching someone explain how a tool worked, or how something fit together and you can say, “yea, yea, I get it.” Then when the thing is actually in front of you, you really get it! It’s so different being here on site.
Here I have worked on framing in the rooms— the closets the doors. Today there are a lot of students here. We have HVAC, plumbing and electrical onsite too, so the carpentry students are working outdoors. I’m working on the gable and framing.
I’m one of a few girls working here and I feel like everyone treats us the same, same opportunity. I actually want to study law— I’ve had that passion since middle school. So this summer I want to visit colleges and get ready to apply next fall.
